Brielle went to her new home

Sorry for the delayed update on this, but Brielle went to her new home, and I think it was a good home for her.  It is not the one I mentioned in my post about having to find her a new home.  That one didn’t work out, but a nice gay couple in Memphis contacted me. They were looking for a medium to large size dog and I texted with one of them off and on for a whole day talking about Brielle and answering questions and he was sure she would be a good fit for them.  They have a fenced in yard, and live near a huge park in Memphis that has a dog park, and they go to that park a lot.  I did warn them to wait to take her to the dog park until they’ve had her a little while because she is a runner and I didn’t want her to get away from them! They came to meet her and decided she was perfect for them!  They loaded up their truck with all her stuff.  They had a small truck and Brielle was so spoiled that all her stuff completely filled up the back [...]

Finding Brielle A New Home :(

DSCN3665

As much as I hate to say it, I am looking for a new home for Brielle.  While she and Davey did learn how to play better together, she is still too big a dog with him when she gets excited and still hurts him accidentally.  I would have stuck it out, but I’m making some decisions about moving into a new home, and I won’t be able to keep her when I move. Davey also has not learned how to treat Brielle, although she has done better about being more gentle with him.  I catch him slapping her and sometimes even climbing on her, and while she will put up with it great, with little to no reaction, I do not want him treating her this way, and I have not found a way to get him to understand he can’t do that to a dog even if they let him. I am most likely moving somewhere that does not allow dogs, and if this plan doesn’t work out, I will be renting a house somewhere else and it is hard to find one that allows dogs and even if they do allow dogs, I would have a pet [...]

Definitely need a fence!

So far I have been taking Brielle out on a leash because my fence is falling down in the back and I am being sent an in-ground fence (like Invisible Fence) for review.  They told me it can take up to a month for me to get the in-ground fence and other products they are sending me because they were busy from a trade show, and if I haven’t received it by the end of the year to let her know.  I was hoping to have it in time for Bringing Home Brielle, but that obviously isn’t happening.  Brielle definitely needs a fence of some sort.  When I take her out on her retractable leash I have to let her run laps around me for a bit because she really wants to run and play outside! When I go out to check the mail or take the trash out, if Davey isn’t up or is in his seat eating, I just go on out,and I tell Brielle “No, Stay!” before I walk out the door, and so far that has been just fine and she hasn’t tried to follow me out.  I only shut the storm door then, which is [...]

Brielle’s Vet Appointment

Briellecloseup

Brielle had her checkup and shots today and she did very well at it. Much better than Davey was!  It was a handful taking both of them, and I didn’t see my stepmom’s offer to watch Davey for me until after we got home.  Brielle weighs 55lb and they said she is a good weight.  She has filled out a bit more just since I got her.  I guess I can stop feeding her extra now!  They also said she is about 10 months old, and probably still growing.  I am happy about this because I only like big dogs, and to me, the bigger the better!  And she is growing up WITH Davey so even if she gets bigger I don’t think it should be an issue with Davey.  I was so glad to hear she is so young, because this means she and Davey can grow up together, and she will hopefully be in our lives for many more years. She tested negative for worms or heartworms, but we won’t know for sure on the heartworms until she has been on heartworm preventative on time every month for 6 months.  She got her first round of shots, and [...]

Learning how to play together, finally!

No Brielle in the photo because every time I tried to catch a picture or video of them actually playing in the box, Brielle would stop playing!

Thanks everyone for the comments on my previous post about Davey being a “monster” lately.  I really do appreciate any feedback from my readers, but we are not getting rid of Brielle, she is already part of the family. Things are getting better the last few days, and Davey and Brielle are learning how to play together without hurting each other.  Brielle is learning she needs to be more careful with Davey, so she’s not nipping or scratching him anymore, but she does occasionally knock him down on accident.  When he does get knocked down, he usually laughs about it now unless he falls against something and it hurts.  With Brielle learning to be more careful, Davey is happy that he can play with her now.  I only have to get on to them when they start to get a little TOO rowdy, but generally they are okay together.  They played together a long time yesterday afternoon.  Davey climbed into a big box Brielle’s new dog bed came in and closed himself up in it.  Brielle would start sniffing and poking her nose at the flaps of the box trying to go in after him, and Davey would open it [...]

High Hopes for Pets review

HighHopesInstagram

High Hopes for Pets recently sent me a box full of dog treats for my new dog Brielle. I hadn’t bought any treats when I got Brielle, just didn’t think about it, so I really appreciated getting this package from High Hopes, and I’m sure Brielle appreciated it too! I am only guessing at what Brielle’s life was like before I got her. She was found starving and abandoned by the people I got her from. I’m looking into all natural treats with human grade ingredients for her, trying to get her as healthy as I can and keep her healthy. She was having some digestive issues from the cheap dog food I bought at first. It’s not an extremely cheap dog food, but it’s not the good premium dog food either, and it is full of red dyes too. So I have been looking at better food and treats for her. One thing I realized about her when we got this package of treats is I don’t think she has ever been given treats much, if at all. And she was probably punished for eating anything that was not in her food bowl, or punished for begging for food. [...]

Brielle is now like a playful puppy!

Brielle

Brielle seems to be getting used to us more and adjusting pretty well.  Even just since I posted about her 2 days ago!  She is becoming much more playful, and not ONLY when she needs to poop either!  This is a little bit of a problem at times, because she gets so wild and knocks Davey down or scratches him.  Of course she doesn’t mean to, but she can get pretty frisky and wild and Davey doesn’t know to stay out of her way.  He tries to play with her but he’s really too little to play with a big dog! Today he wanted to play fetch with her and every time I gave him her toy to throw she would snatch it out of his hand before he had a chance to throw it!  He got pretty upset about this actually because he really wants to play fetch with her like Mommy does! I actually just caught her nipping at Davey’s arm trying to play, and apparently she nipped too hard!  I keep playing fetch with her when she gets frisky to try to wear her down and keep her from hurting Davey on accident. This is getting rid [...]

Chewy.com review

ChewyBone-300x300

As you know, I just got a new dog — a yellow lab mix named Brielle! So I decided to include a couple of dog items in our Holiday Gift Guide at Mommy and Me Giveaways, and wanted to cross-post them here since I have been too busy to get much posted over here lately. Yes, Brielle is getting a stocking this year with some special items in it just for her. Our review products she is getting right away though, so she has tried out everything we got from Chewy.com already. I was given a $50 gift code to use at Chewy.com. We need a lot of items for Brielle, but I chose what I thought were some of the most important things to get for her, making sure to get a good variety of items for my review. Here is what I ordered: Shopping on Chewy.com was very easy, and it was simple to add and remove items to my cart. I definitely tested out the “remove from cart” feature quite a bit, because I had a hard time deciding what to get! I added several items to my cart and then narrowed it down. As you can [...]

Brielle is the strangest dog!

Brielle is the strangest dog!

So I’ve had Brielle for a few days now…  she really is a wonderful dog!  But she has some odd traits I just don’t understand!  We have had a little bit of a chewing problem, so I got some bones for her.  One was just a regular rawhide bone, the others are a peanut butter filled chew.  I have no clue where 2 of the chews have disappeared to.  It turns out she is a dog who hides her bones!  She only hid those, the rawhide has been lying on the floor, but she did hide it in my bed yesterday once!  That’s not the weird part.  I know lots of dogs hide their bones. So today some review products for my other blog came.  I am having a week-long dog event over there next month (I don’t have the stats yet to line up something like that on this blog, but I may cross-post my reviews for it!) so some of her review products came today.  She got a really good bone, the kind that has some traces of meat left on the bone when it is processed.  She took it at first, and has chewed on it here [...]

We have a new addition to our family ~ Brielle!

Here is Brielle, our new family member!

I had the most wonderful dog in the world, Callie, for most of 6 years.  I had to give her to a friend the last few months of that time because I was living somewhere where I couldn’t have dogs.  She passed away a few months ago while living with that friend.  I really didn’t think I would get another dog because I knew I would never find another one like her.  Callie was abused as a puppy, and this made her extremely calm and docile, and very low-maintenance as long as it was just me and her, and later Davey.  Bring men around and she had all kinds of problems, but she was really the perfect dog.  The last 3 or 4 months or so I have been looking at dogs at the shelters’ websites and on Craigslist.  I keep finding a dog and thinking they seem perfect for me, but then I would hesitate, knowing I would never find another dog as perfect as Callie.  I’ve had my share of difficult dogs, mostly puppies.  And I knew I would never get another puppy again, and that whatever dog I did get would be housebroken already. This morning I [...]
